The Friends help further the park’s mission of environmental education and promoting the park as an urban green space.

Most opportunities to help don't require a big commitment in time, just what you can spare. All of the opportunities pay back in lots of enjoyment for yourself and the attendees, and more time spent in the park. How bad can that be?

Some of the areas you can help with:

Join a dedicated group of volunteers who meet periodically to help the park staff by repairing and building our hiking and biking trails, maintaining bridges, etc. Enjoy the beauty of the outdoors; get fresh air and fellowship with other park lovers.

Help publicize and plan these wonderful educational programs for children and adults. These informative programs provide a way for families to spend quality time and learn about the treasures found in nature. Topics include hiking, Native Americans, aquatic ecology, and more.

Programs generally last from 10 a.m. to 12 noon once a month. Many parents bring a picnic and take advantage of the hiking trails which range from very easy (around the lake) to strenuous and challenging.

We need teachers and assistants for these small classes for 5th and 2nd graders who come from the schools to enjoy hands on experience with water creatures. The kids have a blast when they put on their wading boots and wade in the shallow streams to collect insects which they can look at under microscopes. If you want to remember how much fun this can be, come and watch their faces as they discover the mysteries under the water.

School programs are held March through May and September through November, Monday through Friday. Volunteers arrive at 8:45 and leave at 2 pm.

Training is provided at the begining of each season. You can help often or just once a month. Volunteers are also needed to deliver pre-visit kits to schools.

For more information email Cathy Taylor or call the Park: 244-5565.

Volunteers are needed to man the classroom within Park Center on weekends so the public can look around and try out activities in there.

We see lots of groups weekdays during the summer, and can sometimes use an extra naturalist.

Friends Day at Paris Mountain State Park has been very well received by the Greenville Community. On Saturday, April 25th we will have our 10th Annual Friends Day. This festive educational event includes hiking, scavenger hunts for the children, educational exhibits, boating, food, music, and more.

There are many ways to volunteer to help with this special event, by setting up, cleaning up, helping with parking, being a guide on the trails, planning events, and helping the day to run smoothly.

Get involved with an exciting project, raising money to renovate the historic Camp Buckhorn built in the 1930’s by the Civilian Conservation Corp.

There is a lot of support for this project and as of January 2009, we have raised over $300,000, with the help of a matching grant from the Graham Foundation.

You can help by writing grants, approaching local businesses for in-kind donations of materials, making presentations to local groups about the Camp Buckhorn project, or helping plan and implement special fundraising events.
